The academy is our Year Out for those between the ages of 18 and 30 who have a heart to grow as a disciple of Jesus and develop as a leader for Jesus.

 

It’s a year to serve God, be trained & inspired and explore the gifts and calling given by Him. Jesus calls us all to ‘bear much fruit’ - fruitfulness is God’s call over our lives. Doing all we can, then, to be fruitful for Jesus should be a key part of our lives as disciples. This year is about being equipped for a life of fruitfulness.

A chance to be discipled and mentored, with an emphasis on growth in character, servanthood and growing in discovering the call of God.

The academy will run for 10 months from September 2025 to June 2026 based in a Salt & Light Advance church, building relationships, serving in key areas, taking responsibility and being trained in leadership and character. The year out is run by Witney Community Church but participants may be based in any one of the Salt & Light Advance churches and visit and serve across the network of churches.

The academy is part time, giving space for the participants to get a part time job if required.  

 

Local church commitments to include: 

  • Sunday attendance and area of service 

  • Lifegroup participation 

  • Other areas of service (e.g. youth, outreach) 

 

Weekly commitment of Fridays 

  • Teaching/discipleship mornings 10-15 in the year (involving a variety of Salt & Light Advance leaders)  

  • Salt & Light Advance Friday leaders’ mornings x5 in the year 

  • Vision & Prayer days x3 in the year 

 

Teaching areas covered to include: 

  • Leadership (the heart of a leader, the disciplines of a leader, the skills of a leader) 

  • Discipleship 

  • Scripture (including an overview of key biblical narratives, for example the Exodus story, Isaiah and a NT book)

Personal mentoring: 

  • Each participant will be followed and coached by a local mentor 

 

Events: 

  • Participation in Salt & Light Advance Celebrations

  • Participation in Thrive

​​

Training: 

  • Participants to read a selection of books on leadership and discipleship through the year

  • Participants to complete two of the Salt & Light Advance’s training programmes:

    • School of the Spirit,

    • School of Leadership

    • Upper Room 

​​

Foreign trip: 

  • Aim to join a European trip in the year

EXPECTATIONS

Participant expectation  

We expect the following from the programme participant: 

  • To be fully committed to Jesus, the church and the Kingdom and to be committed to the heart, vision and values of Salt & Light Advance.  

  • To be fully committed to responsibilities and activities with a teachable, servant-hearted attitude. 

  • To be open and up-front about any difficulties or challenges associated with the year

COST

We want to keep the cost to you as low as possible and will subsidise as much as we can. The cost for the year will be £1300

​

This will include all the conferences, training days and trips. You will be responsible for organising accommodation and paying your bills for living expenses and travel to the Friday sessions and Oxfordshire based events.
